Water powered No working mills remain. There was a corn mill adjacent to the Chapel House Inn and the original mill pool shape can be still be seen in the garden of New Mills Cottage; and the stream still flows. The original Mill Lead (route of) can still be seen between the mill pool area and Waugh Brow Farm Also Healdmill, near “Wee Bridge”, Slade Lane/Smith Lane judging by property names, on 1910 OS, of Mill Cottage. (Reflections p.62 gives a name of Brook cottage). The main corn mill was on Mill Lane adjacent to the Bull’s Head P.H and one of the original mill stones can been seen by the southern doorway. It was powered by water collected in a pool running the length of Dam(son) Lane. This mill later converted and expanded into Crepe/Crape production. The mill/factory was closed and demolished in the mid 19th century. An advertisement for the sale of equipment was placed in the Manchester Guardian 01/03/1856 - click here to see a pdf copy. Other milling was carried out on farms within the area see Gin ring below.
