At the time of Domesday Book the village name was spelled Motburlege (Anglo Saxon) from*: Mot: A meeting place or hill - it is not surprising that St.Wilfrid’s is virtually at the centre of the parish and on raised ground, although not the highest. There are a number of mounds to the west and south of Lindow Moss some 13m (43ft) higher but these are on the edge of the parish some 3km away. bur(gh): a town or village lege: an open tract of country.
Other spellings: de Modburlegh (Rectors 1304, 1306& 1322) de Modburleg (Rector 1307)
