Rose Queen Festival Tel: 01565 873373
Today, one of the largest and most popular events in the village Calendar is the Mobberley Rose Queen Festival which is held, each year, on the first Saturday in June.
The Festival was first started, on a very small scale, by a schoolgirl on Hall Bank in 1922. It grew in popularity, year by year, until 1939 when the second World War brought a temporary halt. In the early years, all the children of the village took part and even the youths had a Morris Troupe that was something to be reckoned with. The Rose Queen Festival became one of the most important days in village life as there were very few other activities locally - unlike in the present day.
In 1960, the Festival restarted and has continued to grow steadily. Today, it is still a major occasion, offering opportunities for young and old alike to take part in dancing, fancy dress, the ever-popular Village Wedding and the Rose Queen’s retinue. Choosing of the Mobberley Rose Queen and her Court takes place in February at the Victory Hall and all children living within the village boundaries are able to take part.
One of the more unique aspects is the formation of Morris dance troupes involving children from the Village - Mobberley is believed to be one of the few Festivals in the country which still encourage local children to provide a dancing display during the Festival, instead of experienced Morris troupes.
The procession follows a long-established route, setting out from the Victory Hall, along Town Lane, Bucklow Avenue and Edenfield Road, stopping outside Mallory Court and Leycester House, where the Morris Dancers give a display. The procession then returns to the Old Hall Field for an afternoon of dancing, side-stalls, funfair and other entertainments. The Children dance for the Rose Queen and her Court and a large crowd witnesses the crowning by the Crown Bearer to the Queen.
In 1997, the Rose Queen Festival celebrated its 75th year with a BBQ and disco on the Old Hall Field; it is part of the tradition of Mobberley Village and hopefully it will be retained and enjoyed long into the new Millennium.
